Clubs and Activities

Yoke

SPONSOR: Morgan Hodson
Available to; 6th, 7th, 8th graders
Season: Year Round
Yoke is an after school, Christian club that meets on Tuesday nights from 7:00 to 8:00. Local college students that are interested in mentoring middle school students lead yoke. Each week they play fun and crazy games, sing songs, and have a lesson.

Yearbook

SPONSOR: Robin Spears
Season: Year Round
Available to: Any AMS student. – All Grades

Students must complete an application and have a teacher recommendation. Students must be able to attend meetings regularly.

Time: This club meets every Tuesday from 3:00 to 4:00. The Business Team meets on Thursday from 3:00 to 4:00.

The yearbook club is responsible for producing the AMS Middle Ages yearbook. They are responsible for pictures, copy, ads, and marketing of the yearbook. They help in editing pages for the final copy.

Jay-Tweens

SPONSOR: Lon Fox and Jared Smith
Available to: 5th, 6th graders
Season: Year Round
Jay tweens is an organization for the younger students that selects community service activities and attend several events.

F.C.A.

SPONSOR: Buddy Wolfe
Purpose: Student growth; focus on life skills, attitudes and behavior.
Available to: All grades – Boys and Girls
Time Frame: All year
Skills Necessary: None
Amount of Time: All year; 1-hour meetings per week. After school activities include lock-ins and other events.

Dance Team

COACHES: Cathy Adderhold & Monique Maples
Available to: 6th, 7th, 8th grade girls
Season: Fall – Winter
Tryouts are held during the spring. There is a mandatory one-week camp in the summer. Practice is 2 times a week after school during the school year. The dance team performs at home football, basketball games, pep rallies and other functions. There is some cost involved for the parent (uniforms and camp).

Dance Team News
Dance Team will practice Mondays and Wednesdays until 4:00. Dancers need to be dressed and ready no later than 3:20. Dancers need to practice all three dances at home using their DVD.

Journaling

SPONSOR: Chris Gilmore
Available to: All and any students that can be at school early on a Friday morning.
Season: Throughout the school year
Skills: A desire to write creatively
Time/Place: Journaling meets in the library Friday mornings from 7:40 am until morning dismissal.

Tornado Trackers

SPONSORS: Mary Beth Warwick and Monique Maples
Purpose: The Tornado Trackers club is a non-competitive running/walking fitness club. The goal of the club is to help adolescents realize the importance and benefits of physical fitness, proper nutrition, and goal setting.
Available to: 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th graders
Season: Fall thru Spring

Tornado Club

SPONSORS: Lon Fox and Mike Delozier
Available to: 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th graders
Season: Year Round
This club is a recognition program for students who maintain a “B” average, have perfect attendance, or students who show significant improvement in academics over a period of time. Each year students have the opportunity to attend the Tornado Club trip in the month of May. Trips include New York, Washington, D.C., Chicago, Walt Disney World, and Universal Studios in Orlando, Islands of Adventure, Sea World and Coco Beach. Students have the opportunity to raise funds throughout the year for the trip.

Band

SPONSOR: Bryant Adler
Available to: 6th, 7th, and 8th graders
Season: Year-round
Band meets during the school hours throughout the academic school year. Students will be required to have their own instruments and supplies, but will not be left out because of a financial situation. We play at pep rallies and special events throughout the year.

Science Club

SPONSOR: Shawn Kerr
Available to: 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th graders

Season: Year Round

Chess

SPONSOR: Mrs. Hutton
COACHES: David & DJ Marsh

Available to: 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th graders
Season: Year Round
Meets on Tuesday and Thursday after school

Chorus

SPONSOR: Trent Gilmore
Available to: 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th graders
Season: Year Round
Students audition at the beginning of the year and perform concerts and participate in choral festivals at various times throughout the year. Students must be willing to participate in fundraisers.

Tech Team

SPONSOR: Mike Delozier
Available to: 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th graders
Season: Year Round
The tech team is an after school (and sometimes during school) activity that allows students the opportunity to learn technical skills and responsibility. Students will learn and work with the various types of technology that are found throughout the AMS building. Everything from video production to computer support may be involved. Students must apply at the beginning of each year through a process that includes a 300 word essay and teacher references.

Drama

SPONSOR: Lisa Brown and Marty Odom
Available to: All Grades
Mission: to give students the opportunity to work together with a group for a common goal thus increasing team-building skills, time management skills, problem solving skills and self-confidence and esteem.
Season/Time: The club begins meeting in mid-August and meets twice a week from 3:15 PM until 5:00 PM. The play is performed four times during school hours. One performance is given for each grade level and there is an evening performance for parents and community members. The play is performed in the High School Auditorium.

Jay-Teens

Jay teens are an organization that selects community service activities and attend several events.

Y-Teens

SPONSORS: Lisa Williamson and Gloria Miller
Available to: 7th and 8th grade girls
Season: Year Round
Y-Teens is a service organization, similar to Jay Teens. One of the benefits of being in Y-Teens is that it gives girls a chance to bond and talk about issues specific to being a girl. They select a community service activity and attend several Y-Teen events. One of the culminating events of the year events will be a Y-Teen dance that is “dressy”. Meetings are every other Wednesday morning from 7:40 until 8:05 and every other Friday from 3:00 to 4:00.
