6th Grade

Sixth Grade News

Ms. Amburgey's first period math class went to visit the AES preschools on Thursday, February 25, to read their shape books that they created in class. Everyone had a great time, even the "giants"! (Many of the preschoolers thought our sixth grade boys were giants.)

The sixth grade has been busy preparing for the upcoming TCAP tests. Each class is working on basic skills and covering the state standards. Please be sure to check your child's planner every night.

The students also went on field trip to the Heritage Planetarium as a supplement to their unit on space. The honor roll students tested their vocal abilities at Big Mama's Karaoke. We may have some upcoming American Idols!!!!

6th Grade News

We are happy to be able to present a web page designed for all sixth grade students and parents. Please visit it often to see updated information regarding your sixth grade student. The web site is www.teacherweb.com/tn/ams/sixthgrade.

The sixth grade recently went on a field trip to the Ripley's Aquarium in the Smokies. The kids were able to see a variety of fish and study aquatic ecosystems. They especially enjoyed watching the sharks swim over their heads in the shark tunnel. Students' will next study moon phases and the solar system.

Math classes are continuing to study basic skills with an emphasis on decimals. Parents please keep working with your student on multiplication facts. Students are encouraged to bring their homework home each night and go over it with their parents. Please look for homework nightly to reinforce basic skills.

Language Arts classes have been working on singular and plural nouns. Next, they will work on parts of a letter and various forms of writing to help prepare students for the upcoming writing exam.

Reading classes are getting ready to start trade books to help reinforce reading skills and standards. Students need to remember to keep studying their literary terms and vocabulary words for reading. Study for your friday quizzes over these words.

Social studies classes are now studying the culture, geography, and history of ancient China!!

Please keep checking your student planners. We are planning an incentive field trip for those students who were on the first nine weeks honor roll. We will be sending home information soon!!

After School Tutoring

After school tutoring for students began on Monday, August 4. It will be available Monday through Thursday until 4:00. Students must have homework or skills that need improving to attend. Mrs. Martin will be working with seventh and eighth graders, Mrs. Brown with sixth graders, and Mr. Wolfe with the fifth graders.
