Faculty Profile

About Me
Hi! My name is Maria Fioravanti, and I joined Alcoa City Schools as a mental health counselor in 2024. I have gained experience in various settings, from a crisis treatment center to a private university counseling center, and now in public education. I have a background in East Tennessee that has fueled a passion for supporting students in this region as they face mental health challenges and learn to navigate difficult life transitions.
Philosophy
I provide counseling services system wide, but the primary schools I work with are Alcoa Middle School, Alcoa High School, and the Perishing Academy of Learning. I meet with students on an individual basis providing in-person counseling services. I specialized in play therapy during my clinical mental health counseling master’s program and am actively pursuing my Registered Play Therapist certification. I like to incorporate elements of play into my work with students to help deepen their self-understanding and gain insight into my students’ experiences. This is also a helpful way to work on developing coping skills and understanding their emotions in a way that feels natural and comfortable.

I believe in the power of the therapeutic relationship even more than the interventions I utilize. I work with my students to help them feel connected to themselves, to others, and to the world around them. My care is tailored to each individual's unique life circumstances and personal preferences. I acknowledge that every human is different and may need a different approach to feel comfortable, understood, and valued. Ultimately, I value each student I work with and am honored to be a part of their journey of self-understanding.
